june's toffee squares

1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg yolk
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 ½ cups semi sweet chocolate chips
1 cup finely chopped nuts (walnuts)

1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
2. Cream butter with electric mixer. Add sugar and beat. Add yolk, flour, and vanilla, and beat. Dough will be loose and crumbly. Press onto a large cookie sheet (use one with sides, not a flat cookie sheet), but don’t spread all the way to the edges; the dough will expand.
3. Bake at 350 for 10 – 12 minutes, or until golden brown.
4. Meanwhile microwave 1 ½ cups of chocolate chips to melt them.
5. When the cookie part is done, remove it from the oven, and let sit for just a minute. Then use a spatula to spread the chocolate onto the base. Sprinkle with walnuts. Slice while warm, then allow them to cool. I put outside or in the freezer, if there’s room. You may need to cut them again later, but it will be a lot easier if the initial cut has been made.
