nana's spaghetti sauce

1 lb. ground beef
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 (15 oz.) can tomato paste
1 (29 oz.) can tomato sauce
1 (29 oz.) can water
1 large onion with 8-10 whole cloves
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
2 bay leaves
1 teaspoon anise
1 Tablespoon sugar
1 Tablespoon dried basil

1. Brown ground beef, then add garlic and saute for a couple of minutes.
2. Add remaining ingredients and simmer as long as you can, adding water as necessary to get to desired sauce consistency.
